This urban project emerged as part of my final year thesis, at the pivotal moment preceding the completion of my Diploma in Architectural Studies (RIBA Part 1). It reflects a broader exploration of how a city can evolve without losing its essence — how architecture can reveal the quiet strengths of a territory rather than overwrite them. Évora, a small Portuguese city with an extraordinary cultural heritage, offered the ideal ground for this investigation.

Évora unfolds like a palimpsest: narrow streets, vibrant façades, and layers of history woven together over centuries. Its atmosphere — both dense and delicate — shaped the project’s narrative. The intention was not to add another object to the city, but to extend its story, to draw out its underlying lines and reconnect the historic core with its peripheral industrial zones, long relegated to the background.

The project is anchored in the idea of a link: an axis that crosses the city not as an infrastructure, but as an experience. This mineral pathway, punctuated by low walls that frame views and guide movement, becomes a thread that ties together a series of cultural programs — a cinema, hotel, offices, art center, open‑air amphitheater, and collective housing. Each building acts as a chapter in the promenade, creating rhythms, pauses, and moments of transition. As visitors move along the axis, they encounter a succession of atmospheres that invite exploration and heighten sensory perception.

Évora’s natural topography, built upon a hillside, required a careful reading of the terrain. Building heights were determined according to altitude, ensuring that the new volumes integrate seamlessly into the city’s silhouette. By cross‑referencing topographic data with existing urban profiles, a guiding height line was established, preserving the harmony of the landscape and avoiding abrupt visual ruptures.

The project was modeled using Rhino and Grasshopper, tools that enabled a precise dialogue between climate, light, and material. In this Mediterranean context, solar management is essential. The local architectural language — vertical, narrow openings that filter direct sunlight — inspired a contemporary interpretation: concrete sun‑breakers, parametrically positioned across the façades. Their density varies according to orientation: more open on the north side to welcome diffuse light, more compact on the south to mitigate overheating. Through Grasshopper, solar trajectories and climatic data were translated into a façade system that is both a climatic device and a defining architectural identity.
